| Fire On Ice |
| On the evening of the fire, the
nightly movie was just getting started. The movie that night was "A
City Burning". I'm not kidding! I was in MMI when someone announced
that the Heavy shop was on fire. We didn't believe him, we thought he was
making a joke about the movie. From the porch, we could see smoke coming
out of a small window. I watched the entire event from first smoke to
burnt out pile of junk. I have lots of film, pictures and memories of the
fire. I'd never seen anything like it before, or since.
Several days earlier, while participating in a fire fighting refresher course, we were taken to the Heavy shop. The fire Marshall explain before we went in, that this building had been condemned due to fire hazard, but was required, so it was still being used. We walked in, a barbeque was being held inside. The place was full of smoke. I heard several un-official reports about the cause of the fire. It had nothing to do with the barbeque. On the day of the fire, the new fire engine was inside. So was the Eagle's jeep. At one point, the garage door was pushed in by a bulldozer. I understood that was the final attempt to rescue the fire engine. The open door ventilated the fire, and the entire building was fully engulfed soon after that. |
