Welcome to the South Pole

Amundsen Scott South Pole Station

The Dome is just a shell, 160 ft diameter, 65 ft tall. In the early 80's there were three, two story buildings inside, housing the galley, bar, communications, library, post office/store and dormitory style rooms. The archways extending to the right and left held one story buildings. The medical building, the power plant, gym, garage, cargo operations and fuel storage. To give you an idea of scale, the entry is about 15 ft tall, enough for tractors to drive in with cargo and supplies.

I was at Pole during the summers of 83/84,84/85,85/86 working in cargo operations and supply. During the "off season" I worked in the New Jersey office of ITT ANS. I had a year round perspective of the station and its operations for almost 4 years. Supplying and maintaining the world's research station at the bottom of the world is an extreme logistics challenge.
